The StoryMap developed for the Tornasole project tells the story of the intervention aimed at combating educational failure and school dropout in the V, VI, and VII districts of Rome.
Tornasole is a four-year project initiated in 2020 and operationally launched in 2021, positioning itself as a genuine hub of pedagogical innovation in support of children, students, parents, teachers, and operators. The project stems from the need to counter educational poverty and school dropout in some of the most fragile areas on the outskirts of East Rome.
Needs
The Paolo Bulgari Foundation aimed to spread awareness of and narrate the Tornasole project in an engaging, dynamic, and interactive manner. Simultaneously, the goal was to bring together various stakeholders and territories in a unique and integrated container:
- 3 funders (Paolo Bulgari Foundation; Con i Bambini Social Enterprise; IF Imparare Fare)
- 5 active associations operating in the area (Antropos Social Cooperative; Borgo Ragazzi Don Bosco; daSud Association; Cubo Libro Cultural Association; Pianoterra ETS)
- 4 territories (Tor Sapienza; Centocelle; Cinecittà; Tor Bella Monaca)
- 3 municipalities (V, VI, VII)
- 14 schools.
Solution
For the dissemination and communication of the Tornasole project to the public, gisAction designed and implemented a set of six StoryMaps. The main one provides an overview of the project, while the other five focus on each of the operational organizations in the area. The main StoryMap presents the project through audio interviews with representatives of the funding associations and the lead organization. It then delves into the project details, presenting the five operational organizations in the territories through interactive maps showcasing educational structures, daily “home-to-work” routes of each operator/educator, and the project’s “keywords.” The StoryMaps dedicated to organizations, accessible from the main StoryMap, delve into the activities and community of each organization. A journey through places, words, and paths is made even more unique by the use of contextual and descriptive audio guiding the visitor throughout the StoryMap.
Benefits
The innovative character of Tornasole’s StoryMaps undoubtedly lies in the fruitful integration of multimedia elements—video, images, but especially audio—and GIS technologies. This combination makes the product easily accessible even to less experienced audiences, guiding the user through the entire StoryMap. The audio, collected by Vito Foderà of the daSud Association and made available through the association’s radio channel, Radio daSud, adds a unique depth and engagement level to the overall StoryMap experience. The audio describes the keywords of the project and the routes of operators/educators who live and move daily through the community, organization, and educational structures of the territory.
