A storymap of gisAction for teaching

The story map “Journey through the pages of “The Betrothed”” is part of the training offer of gisAction addressed to teachers and students of high schools in the context of the integration of new technological tools with the methods of learning and with the disciplinary purposes provided.

Esri’s Story Maps, simple web applications to be implemented, are particularly suitable for educational purposes as they offer a valid support for teaching and dealing with interdisciplinary topics, from history to science, making contents more easily accessible, with a Teaching mode more captivating and interactive teacher-student.

Through ArcGIS Online, a member of the Esri Platform, you can easily learn to tell “stories” by combining interactive maps, with text, photos, videos and other multimedia content.

In this story map we wanted to give life to the narration of the “Promessi Sposi” (The Betrothed), the famous historical novel by Alessandro Manzoni, considered the most famous and the most read of those written in Italian, combining interactive maps 2d and 3d, with text, photos, and other multimedia content, through the places.


The journey is told step by step, the territory is unveiled through its points of interest and described through a catalog raisonné of thematic maps of the ‘600, the era in which the novel is set. An analytical reading of the fresco by Pietro da Cortona was also introduced, “Triumph of Divine Providence, fresco, 1632-1639, Palazzo Barberini, Rome”, as the “Divine Providence” is one of the dominant themes in the Promessi Sposi. Some meaningful illustrations of the novel have been inserted, among the innumerable existing, of the novel over the course of time.


The story map also has an audio reproduction of the music of the 600, which can be activated and deactivated at will.

The realization of the storymap was preceded by an in-depth research on the web of content to be used, following the breakdown in 38 chapters of the novel (ancient maps, pictorial illustrations, characters, itineraries, narrative texts, etc. ..), which allowed the realization of a storyboard of the script of the storymap.
